THE ILLINOIZE: 11th hour drama...Supreme Court stays implementation of cashless bail hours before it takes effect
Happy New Year.
This afternoon, the Illinois Supreme Court stayed the implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act, which eliminates cash bail tomorrow.
The issue was already declared unconstitutional in 65 counties earlier this week (the counties that sued), but it was still set to take effect tomorrow in some of the states largest counties, like Cook, Lake, and DuPage tomorrow.
The court didn’t rule on the constitutionality of the Act, just essentially put the whole state on an even playing field.
The court also promised an expedited appeal.
Much more to come next year.
